Weight management support in Essex is available to help you improve your health and wellbeing. Services include self-help resources, structured Tier 2 programmes, and specialist NHS clinical services depending on your needs. Maintaining a healthy weight can reduce your risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and other serious conditions.
You do not need to make major changes all at once. Small, sustainable steps — such as increasing activity, improving your diet or reducing portion sizes — can make a meaningful difference over time.
Losing just 5% of your body weight can improve:
- Blood pressure
- Cholesterol levels
- Blood sugar control
- Mobility and energy
- Long-term health outcomes
Support in the majority of Essex follows a tiered approach, offering different levels of help depending on your needs.
Residents living in Colchester and Tendring access weight management support through the Weight Management and Complex Obesity Service (WMCOS), originally commissioned by NHS Suffolk & North East Essex ICB.
Although north east Essex services now sit within NHS Essex ICB (from 1 April 2026), WMCOS continues to operate jointly for both Suffolk and north east Essex residents. To ensure residents receive the most accurate information, NHS Norfolk & Suffolk ICB is hosting service information for everyone who uses WMCOS, including residents of Colchester and Tendring. This is why we are directing you to the NHS Norfolk and Suffolk ICB website for details about the service, eligibility and referral routes.
