When Tom, a dad of two from Southend, caught flu last year, he never imagined it would leave him so unwell that he would need hospital treatment.
Like many people, he had always thought of flu as little more than a bad cold. But experiencing it first-hand completely changed his perspective, particularly when it came to protecting his three-year-old son.
“I used to think flu was just a bad cold – until I had it myself and ended up in hospital. That experience changed everything.”
For Tom, the experience brought home just how serious flu can be and why protecting his little boy is so important.
“I believe it’s important to protect not just my child, but everyone else’s children and the wider community.”
Now, Tom wants other parents to understand the importance of protecting their children against flu, particularly those who might be unsure about vaccination.
“I had flu last year and it nearly took me out. I wouldn’t wish that on my child or yours. Please check the latest evidence – it really helps give peace of mind.”
Tom is determined to make sure his son is protected again this winter.
And his message to other parents is simple: “It’s quick, it’s safe, and it costs nothing. Just do it.”
Children aged two and three are eligible for a free NHS flu vaccination, usually given as a quick and painless nasal spray.
Parents can now get their little ones vaccinated at participating local pharmacies, as well as through their GP surgery.
