From time to time, medicine shortages affect the UK and beyond. As a result, they are often outside local control. Pharmacy and GP teams across Essex are working hard to support patients and provide safe alternatives where needed.

Please remember that staff are here to help and deserve to be treated with respect. Abusive or threatening behaviour is not acceptable and will not help the situation. By working together, we can ensure everyone continues to receive safe and appropriate care

Why medicines may be unavailable

From time to time, medicine shortages occur due to manufacturing delays, problems getting ingredients, increased global demand, or distribution issues.

This is not just happening in Essex, it is a national and global issue affecting many countries.

What is being done

NHS Essex is working with pharmacies, GP practices and national NHS teams to:

  • Share up-to-date guidance on shortages and alternatives
  • Support safe and effective switches to other medicines where needed
  • Ensure teams use limited supplies in the best way for patients

We will continue to follow national advice and act in the best interests of Essex residents.

Pharmacies can only supply medicines that are available from manufacturers and wholesalers.

When there is a shortage, they may not be able to get stock at all, or only in limited amounts. This is outside the control of local pharmacies.

What this means for you

If your usual medicine is not available:

  • Your pharmacist may offer advice or suggest an alternative
  • Your GP or prescriber may review your prescription
  • In some cases, your healthcare professional may recommend a different brand, strength or medicine

It’s completely understandable to feel frustrated or worried if a medicine you rely on isn’t readily available. Medicines shortages are usually temporary, and healthcare teams are working together to keep people safe and supported.

You do not need to manage this on your own. If something feels unclear or upsetting, talking it through with a healthcare professional can help reassure you, explain what’s happening, and confirm that your care is being looked after.
