Who the policy applies to
- Patients and members of the public using NHS services in Essex
- Carers and families supporting patients
- NHS Essex staff
- Organisations that provide NHS services in Essex
Why this policy is important
You have the right to be involved in decisions about your care.
This policy helps to:
- give you more control over your treatment
- make sure you have clear and easy information
- support fair and consistent access to services
- help you choose services that meet your needs
It also supports a health service built around people, not systems.
Choosing your GP practice
You can choose which GP (family doctor) practice you register with.
- You can ask to see a preferred doctor
- The practice will try to meet your choice
- There may be limits, such as location or availability
Choosing where you receive care
If your GP refers you for specialist care:
- you can usually choose which hospital or clinic to attend
- you may also choose the team caring for you
- this applies to both physical and mental health care
Your doctor will help you understand your options.
When choice may be limited
In some situations, choice may not be available.
For example:
- emergencies or urgent care
- some cancer treatments that must happen quickly
- when you are already receiving treatment for the same condition
- some specialist services with limited availability
Changing provider if you are waiting
If you have been waiting a long time, you may be able to change provider.
- This may apply if you have waited over 18 weeks for treatment
- Or over 2 weeks for suspected cancer care
Your care team will advise if this is possible.
Choosing tests and treatments
You may be able to:
- choose where your first specialist test takes place
- be involved in decisions about your treatment
- discuss options with your healthcare professional
This helps you make choices that suit your needs.
Personalised care options
You may have access to more personalised choices, including:
- a personal health budget, which gives you more control over how care is planned and used
- maternity care choices during pregnancy and after birth
- taking part in health research if you wish
These options are based on your needs and what services are available.
Choosing services in the community
For some local services:
- you may be offered a choice of provider
- this depends on what services are available in your area
Your healthcare professional will explain your options.
Making decisions together
NHS Essex supports shared decision-making.
This means:
- you are given clear information about your options
- you are supported to choose what is right for you
- your views, needs and preferences are respected
