Why the policy is important
Social media is an important way to communicate with local communities, share health information and promote NHS services.
The policy helps staff use social media appropriately while protecting patient confidentiality, information security and public trust.
Official NHS Essex social media accounts
NHS Essex manages official accounts across a range of social media platforms.
These accounts are managed by the Communications and Engagement Team and are used to:
- share health information
- promote NHS campaigns
- highlight service developments
- celebrate achievements
- support engagement with local communities
Personal use of social media
Staff are welcome to use social media in a personal capacity.
When posting online, staff should:
- be respectful
- protect confidential information
- avoid sharing patient information
- follow NHS Essex policies
- remember that online activity can affect personal and organisational reputation
Professional conduct online
Staff should not:
- disclose confidential information
- post offensive, discriminatory or defamatory content
- discuss patient care online
- respond to media enquiries on behalf of NHS Essex
- make statements that could damage trust in NHS services
Safeguarding and online safety
The policy includes guidance on safeguarding children, young people and adults at risk.
Staff should report any safeguarding concerns identified through social media and follow NHS safeguarding procedures.
Departmental social media accounts
New departmental social media accounts must be approved by the Communications and Engagement Team.
This helps ensure accounts have clear objectives, appropriate governance and sufficient resources to manage them safely and effectively.
Policy review
This policy was approved on 1 April 2026 and is due for review in April 2028.
