People receiving end of life care may need urgent medicines to manage symptoms. For example, medicines may be needed to manage pain, breathlessness, or nausea.
These medicines may be prescribed by:
- a GP
- a hospital doctor
- a community nurse
- a hospice or palliative care team
Some community pharmacies hold specialist medicines. As a result, medicines can be accessed quickly when needed.
If urgent medicines are needed:
- contact the healthcare professional involved in the person’s care
- contact NHS 111 if it is outside normal GP hours
- call 999 in an emergency
