Dr Giles Thorpe is the Executive Chief Nurse at the NHS Essex Integrated Care Board.
Giles joined the NHS in Essex in 2023 as Executive Chief Nursing Officer at NHS Mid and South Essex Integrated Care Board, bringing extensive senior nursing and quality leadership experience across acute, system and national roles.
Prior to this, Giles was Chief Nurse and Director of Infection Prevention and Control at East Suffolk and North East Essex NHS Foundation Trust. He previously held the role of Director for Clinical Quality and Deputy Chief Nurse at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Earlier in his career, Giles was Deputy Director of Nursing at Colchester Hospital and Deputy Director of Clinical Governance at Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals.
Giles has also held national roles at NHS Blood and Transplant and is a graduate of the Nye Bevan Programme delivered by the NHS Leadership Academy.
He trained as a nurse in London following an initial career in executive recruitment, and brings over two decades of experience in nursing, quality and professional leadership.
Giles completed his professional doctorate in Health Services Management at the University of Essex in 2022 and holds an Honorary Professorship in the School of Health and Social Care.
