Dr Giles Thorpe is the Executive Chief Nurse at NHS Essex Integrated Care Board.
Giles leads nursing and quality across NHS Essex. He works with health and care partners to help ensure people receive safe, high-quality care and positive experiences of NHS services.
He joined the NHS in Essex in 2023 as Executive Chief Nursing Officer at NHS Mid and South Essex Integrated Care Board. He brings more than 20 years of experience in nursing, quality improvement and healthcare leadership.
Before joining NHS Essex, Giles was Chief Nurse and Director of Infection Prevention and Control at East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust. He has also held senior nursing and quality leadership roles at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals.
Alongside his local leadership roles, Giles has worked on national programmes with NHS Blood and Transplant. He is also a graduate of the NHS Leadership Academy’s Nye Bevan Programme, which supports senior leaders across the NHS.
Giles began his healthcare career after working in executive recruitment and trained as a nurse in London. He has dedicated his career to improving the quality and safety of healthcare services.
In 2022, Giles completed a professional doctorate in Health Services Management at the University of Essex. He also holds an Honorary Professorship in the School of Health and Social Care.
